
The Sustainable Solutions Lab (SSL) has awarded its second round of seed grants to two research projects exploring the employment and maternal health impacts of climate change on lower-income and minority communities. The projects, selected out of a highly competitive pool, received $7,500 through funding from SSL-affiliate deans.
A new video series featuring scientists from the Institute for Drug Resistance at UMass Medical School is designed to promote the importance of biomedical research. Celia Schiffer, PhD, the Gladys Smith Martin Chair in Oncology, professor of biochemistry & molecular pharmacology, and founder and director of the Institute for Drug Resistance, created the project to give colleagues the opportunity to explain their research.
UMass Medical School was awarded a $1.7 million grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to address the increasing prevalence of Crohn’s disease in Puerto Rico in a cost-effective, culturally sensitive way. With the funding, Ana Maldonado-Contreras, PhD, assistant professor of microbiology & physiological systems, will tailor a novel diet created at UMass Medical School to patients on the island with different food availability and preferences.

AMHERST, Mass. – Results of a new study by ecologists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst show that 1,330 nurseries, garden centers and online retailers are still offering hundreds of invasive plant species as ornamental garden plants. This includes 20 species that are illegal to grow or sell nationwide.

Associate Professor Dr. Hua Fang (Computer & Information Science) was recently awarded $2,735,127 as part of a prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Project Grant (R01). Dr. Fang’s award for her research project titled “iPAT: Intelligent diet quality pattern analysis for harmonized MA-National trials,” is the first R01 grant in the history of UMass Dartmouth and Dr. Fang’s second such honor. The R01 grant program was created to support health-related research and is the oldest grant mechanism used by NIH.
