Nov. 1, 2007:The President and the Board of Trustees of the University of Massachusetts announce a national search for the position of Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
UMass Amherst was founded in 1863 as a land-grant agricultural college. Today, UMass Amherst is a Carnegie Research University (VH) and the flagship of a five-campus system that also includes UMass Boston, UMass Dartmouth, UMass Lowell, and the UMass Medical School in Worcester. The five campuses are governed by a system president and a 22-member board of trustees.
UMass Amherst has 19,823 undergraduates and close to 6,000 graduate students (43% of the students in University of Massachusetts system). Students at UMass Amherst come from all 50 states and nearly 100 foreign countries. UMass Amherst's 10 schools and colleges award Bachelor's degrees in 87 fields, Associate's degrees in 6, Master's degrees in 73, and Doctorates in 51. UMass Amherst employs 4,657 people, including 1,194 full-time faculty members.
In recent years, UMass Amherst faculty members have won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award for Poetry, the National Medal of Science, the Draper Award in Engineering and numerous other awards including: MacArthur, Guggenheim, Sloan, Woodrow Wilson, and Fulbright Fellowships. The campus currently has 97 active patents. In FY '07, UMass Amherst had over $131 million dollars of sponsored research from 1,137 awards.
UMass Amherst is located on nearly 1,450-acres in a historic, culturally rich New England town, two hours from Boston and three hours from New York City. It is a partner in the Five College Consortium, which facilitates course interchanges and faculty cooperation with neighboring Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith colleges.
