UMass Medical School Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police Jack Luippold is retiring from his post this week, while his successor, Deputy Chief Clanford “Leon” Pierce prepares to take the reins.
“Chief Luippold retires this week after more than 13 years at UMMS and 34 years at the university,” said John C. Lindstedt, executive vice chancellor for administration and finance. “His service to our campus has been immeasurable and we are all grateful for his leadership.”
Pierce takes the top post effective Jan. 10. He has been at UMMS since 2016, coming from the Connecticut State Police, where he was a troop commander, area commander and chief of staff to the colonel of the CSP, among other assignments. Since coming to UMMS, Pierce has been involved in the Workplace Violence Prevention Committee, oversight of patrol operations, and a number of initiatives that maintain and improve the quality of campus life.
“His experience, judgment and insight have made him a valuable member of the campus public safety community and I look forward to working with him in this important leadership role,” Lindstedt said.
