UMass tops list for biotech patents in Massachusetts

February 10, 2012:The University of Massachusetts has been the leading recipient of biotechnology patents in Massachusetts over the past four years, according to the Boston Business Journal's analysis of data from the US Patent and Trademark Office published in today's edition.

UMass was No. 1 on the Top 25 list of the largest biotech patent recipients, with 74 patents from 2008 to 2011, the analysis conducted by the Journal's Research Department showed. The University scored ahead of MIT, Harvard, Tufts and Boston University -- the other higher education institutions to make the list. UMass also ranked first in patents for the last two years - 2011 and 2010.

``Our ranking is testament to the intellectual firepower on all five UMass campuses and the inventive and entrepreneurial spirit that infuses the work in our classrooms, clinics and laboratories,'' said UMass President Robert L. Caret. ``For those of us who work here, it is vivid illustration of what we already know -- and that is we continue to play a major role in improving the quality of life in Massachusetts and around the world.''

The granting of patents is a key step in a process that begins with faculty research and innovation and ultimately leads to the creation of new treatments, products and companies. Last month, President Caret announced that UMass continues to be a licensing leader, pointing to an Association of University Technology Managers survey that placed UMass in the Top 15 nationally in generating income from the licensing of faculty-derived discoveries and products.

In the Boston Business Journal survey, the Top 10 rankings by patents from 2008 to 2011 were:

1.UMass, 74
2.Massachusetts General Hospital, 71
3.MIT, 63
