BOSTON, May 31, 2006 --Today, the University of Massachusetts honored outstanding Massachusetts high school and community college students with its University Scholars award.
This year's 74 scholarship winners ranked either first or second in their high school graduating classes or were the top-ranked students at their community colleges. Each University Scholar will receive $10,000 annually toward college costs. That sum is guaranteed for a total of eight semesters, provided the student maintains at least a 3.0 grade point average and takes at least 12 credits per semester.
UMass President Jack M. Wilson said, "This scholarship program enables us to attract many of the best students in the state to our campuses. These University Scholars have proven their academic ability at the high school or community college levels, and we are confident that they will continue their success at UMass. It is a pleasure to be able to reward their hard work and perseverance in this manner."
The award ceremony was held at the University of Massachusetts Club in downtown Boston. Many of the scholars in attendance were accompanied by family and friends.
Marcellette G. Williams, UMass Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and International Relations, said, "Since the University scholars program was initiated in 1997, more than 870 Massachusetts high school and community college students have taken advantage of this unique educational opportunity."
To be eligible to become a University Scholar, a high school senior must rank first or second in his or her class and score at least 1,200 on the SATs. In addition, they must be nominated by their high school principals. Community college winners must be ranked number one academically at their institution and be nominated by their college presidents.
