UMass Boston will play Webster University on Friday in Iowa.
UMass Boston's baseball team is headed back to the Division III College World Series. After beating the New England College Pilgrims 5-4 on Friday, the Beacons bounced back from a Game Two loss on Saturday to beat the Pilgrims 6-2 in the final game in the best-of-three series.
"Each game could have gone either way," Head Coach Brendan Eygabroat said after the final out. "We got some really clutch hits. Our seniors led us. ...We were able to hand the ball off to Bob and that's usually game over."
Senior pitcher Bobby Tramondozzi of Peabody has now closed out the 2019 Little East Conference Tournament, the UMass Boston Regional, and the Super Regional.
"After pitching Friday, figuring out what their lineup is and how they attack fastballs, sliders, I just knew I needed to focus," Tramondozzi said.
Senior shortstop Charlie Huegi of Sandy Hook, Connecticut was named the Most Outstanding Player of the two-day tournament. He finished the three-game series 4-9 with one run, two doubles, and six RBI.
"I like being the second lead-off of the team. I just kind of take a deep breath, tune everything out, and just lock in," Huegi said.
The 35-12 Beacons will play the 37-11 Webster University Gorloks at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Friday at 2:15 p.m. Chapman and Washington & Jefferson are the other two teams in UMass Boston's bracket; the winner of their double-elimination tournament will face Babson, Johns Hopkins, Birmingham-Southern, or Heidelberg for a best-of-three championship series and the national title.
This is UMass Boston’s third trip to the College World Series in 10 years. UMass Boston made it to Appleton, Wisconsin for the World Series in 2010 and 2017.
