UMass Amherst virtual celebration of the class of 2020 announced, with in-person ceremony to follow

A virtual celebration for the class of 2020 on Friday, May 8, the day commencement would have occurred, has been announced. Details will follow, and individual schools and colleges are expected to announce virtual activities and events to commemorate seniors’ years at UMass Amherst.

This online event is not a substitute for an on-campus celebration, which will still take place sometime after restrictions on large gatherings are lifted.

In March, the commencement team requested input from students, parents and the campus community on how to celebrate commencement. They received many thoughtful and creative proposals and continue to seek additional feedback regarding how and when to celebrate 2020 commencement on campus.

Caps, gowns and tassels will be available at no charge through Jostens for both virtual and in-person ceremonies. Jostens will guarantee delivery by May 8 for all orders placed by April 17. To order, visit the Jostens website. Graduates earning dual or triple degrees should order online and send an email to commencement@umass.edu to receive additional tassels.

In the meantime, opportunities to share memories and photos in caps and gowns  via social media will be available.
