Graduate programs in several disciplines at the University of Massachusetts Amherst rank among the best in the nation as reported in the new 2023 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools.
Each year, U.S. News ranks a variety of the graduate programs in six prominent fields: business, nursing, engineering, education, law and medicine. In addition, rankings are published periodically for a variety of other disciplines; this year, new rankings were published for public affairs, public health, social work and doctoral programs in economics, psychology and the science fields of math, statistics, biostatistics, biological sciences, computer science, chemistry and earth sciences.
The UMass Amherst rankings for 2023 include:
The School of Public Health and Health Sciences is ranked 31st.
The Isenberg School of Management’s full-time MBA program was named number 53, up from 57 last year, and the part-time MBA program was ranked at 32nd.
The College of Engineering is ranked at 57. Rankings published for specialty areas in the College of Engineering include chemical engineering at 34; civil at 48; computer at 38; electrical/electronic/communications at 53; environmental/environmental health at 45; industrial/manufacturing/systems at 39; material at 49; mechanical at 63; and biomedical at 82.
The School of Public Policy is at now No. 56 for graduate studies in public affairs, up from No. 58 last year.
The College of Education is ranked 71st, up from 76th in 2022.
Several programs in the natural sciences were ranked for the first time in four years, including: biological sciences at 74th; biostatistics at 31st; chemistry at 62nd; geology/earth sciences: 51st; mathematics: 59th; physics: 53rd; and statistics: 51st; and computer science at 23rd, which also ranked in all the sub-specialties: artificial intelligence at 16th, programming language at 21st, systems at 22nd and theory at 23rd.
Several programs in the social sciences and humanities also were awarded national rankings – economics at 79 and psychology at 51.

Fine arts at 89.
In the social sciences and humanities—English at 41, history at 48, political science at 56, and sociology at 29, with the sex and gender studies program ranked 8th.
In health—audiology at 26, speech language pathology at 45, and clinical psychology at 50.
