Gang Han, PhD, professor of biochemistry & molecular biotechnology, has been elected by the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) to its College of Fellows. Dr. Han was nominated, reviewed and elected by peers and members of the AIMBE College of Fellows for creative advances in the development of nanomaterials for biophotonic applications.
Han’s research is at the intersection of nanotechnology, neuroscience, bioimaging and therapy. His lab focuses on developing and designing synthetic and semisynthetic nanomaterials or small molecules with unique programmable physical properties for basic science and biomedical applications. Using synthetic chemistry, materials science, biochemistry and cell biology, Han creates light-active nanomaterials and molecules that can be used to probe signal transduction pathways, image single molecules or active cells, and potentially deliver drugs.
Han joined UMass Chan Medical School in 2010 after completing his postdoctoral fellowship at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In 2014, Han received the Materials Horizons Symposia Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry. In 2013, he received a EUREKA (Exceptional Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration) Award from the National Institutes of Health. Han received his PhD in biochemistry and nanotechnology from UMass Amherst in 2007.
The AIMBE College of Fellows comprises the top 2 percent of medical and biological engineers in the country, among them distinguished engineering and medical school chairs, research directors, professors, innovators, and entrepreneurs who are regularly recognized for their contributions in teaching, research and innovation.
A formal induction ceremony will be held during AIMBE’s 2022 Annual Event on March 25. Han will be inducted along with 152 colleagues who make up the AIMBE Fellows Class of 2022.
